Footscray Road to benefit from improvement works

Footscray Road in Melbourne is soon to undergo a number of improvements, which should benefit the 1,000 cyclists who use the route during peak times every morning.

A total of $475,000 has been earmarked for the project, which will be spent on the path that runs from Docklands Drive to Maribyrnong River.

Not only is the link vital for commuters living in the western suburbs, but also for families who travel along it during weekends.

Minister for roads Terry Mulder highlighted just how important the path is for local people, describing it as a "priority route on the Principal Bicycle Network".

"Upgrading the shared path on Footscray Road will minimise impacts on other road users and provide increased safety, capacity and priority for cyclists and pedestrians," he commented.

A number of improvements are in the pipeline, including the installation of new pedestrian-operated signals on the westbound service road.

Other changes involve marking the route with pedestrian and bicycle logos, as well as widening and reconstructing parts of the existing path under CityLink.

Efforts will also be made to trim back vegetation and enhance the existing street lighting, which may be a deciding factor in a Melbourne property investment.

With a new academic year kicking off this week, children in another Australian capital city are being encouraged to cycle to school more often. The installation of new bike racks at several inner-city schools by Sydney City Council should make this an easier process.
