The Navy could soon be opening a new base in Brisbane, as the city has been recommended as a potential new location for the facility.
It has been pinpointed by the Defence Force Posture Review, which is responsible for deciding whether Australia's military resources are currently in the right locations.
The report established that the Port of Brisbane could complement the existing facility in Sydney and is the best location on the east coast for the base.
"There are few viable alternative locations to Brisbane that have the necessary capacity for development as a fleet base and are suitable for the range of naval vessels, including large amphibious ships and submarines," stated the report.
Queensland premier Anna Bligh commented on the recommendations, saying that a naval base would be welcomed in the state.
She identified that jobs and revenue would be created in the area, while the report suggested that Brisbane already has the infrastructure to support the base.
With the prospect of job creation on the horizon, this could be the perfect time to make a property investment in the region.
At present, the Royal Australian Navy has its headquarters in Bulimba, found on the Brisbane River, although there are no ships or commissioned establishments there.
