· Resident population in NZ is estimated at 4,009,100 as at 30 June 2003 .

· National population grew by 70,000 (1.8%) in the year to June 30.

· 60% of that growth was a result of net migration, with permanent and long term arrivals exceeding departures by 42,500.

· Of the total population gain approximately two thirds will settle in Auckland . Given the average household population of 2.7 people per house, the numbers extrapolate to an additional 10,500 household units being required.

· By 2006 the number of couples without children will exceed those couples with children.

· The North Island will be home to 78% of New Zealanders by 2021

· Auckland Region’s population will increase from 1.22 million to 1.65 million by 2021
